Private vs. Public Campgrounds

Family camping trips are becoming one of the biggest pastimes in America, especially this year when families are trying to find fun, safe things to do. However, when it comes down to choosing a campground, there are a lot of options out there and it can be difficult to know which is right for you and your family. When researching different campgrounds, you’ll find that each has it’s own set of unique benefits. And, with the exception of location, the main difference is whether you want a public or private campground. That’s why today, our team at S&H Campground is discussing the main differences between the two.

Public Campgrounds

Public campgrounds are almost always cheaper than private campgrounds and have more sites for you to choose from. However, that cheaper price point often means no hookups for electricity, water, and sewage. This means instead of hooking up your RV and using your own bathroom, you’ll have to use public restrooms and showers. Additionally, public campgrounds are often noisier and can be booked up super quickly. You usually have to call or book online several weeks or months in advance to get a good reservation.

Private Campgrounds

A private campground is really more like a camp resort than a campsite. They offer full hookups at nearly every site. This means you can hook up your RV to their systems, to gain power and access to your own functional restroom. No more running to the public restroom at night. Private campgrounds also have more amenities, like swimming pools, game rooms, playgrounds, and special events. Finally, private campgrounds are much easier to get reservations for, and they come with pretty spectacular customer service.

What’s Right for You?

If your family is super outdoorsy, doesn’t mind “roughing it”, and is going to be satisfied with fishing and hiking, then a public campground might suite your needs just fine. However, if you’re looking for mini-golf, on-site ice cream, and cozy cabins, give private campgrounds a try!

S&H Campground has been a family vacation destination in Indianapolis and Greenfield, IN, for 50 years. As a private campground, we offer all kinds of activities for you and your family, including mini-golf, water tag, and inflatable playgrounds. And, in addition, you can opt to rent a cozy cabin or reserve a motorhome rental. Please feel free to contact us at (317) 326-3208 with any questions!
